SPRINTS/HURDLES

Lydia Ali of Radnor is back to defend her 100 meter dash title. She comes into this meet running some of her best times of the year. She has a seasonal best of 11.94 from last week's district prelims. A lot of last year's medalists return to try and earn gold. Iman Wilkerson of Penn Hills (3rd in 2010) has been the most consistent sprinter out west. She's run 12.05 this year. Jessica Whitmore of Chambersburg (4th last year) has run 12.06. Zakkiyah Richardson of Pennsbury (5th in 2010) has run 12.16. Deme'shia Davis of Central Dauphin East will also be in the mix after running her best time over the weekend (12.24).

Many of the same names in the 100 will also be in the 200 meter dash. Wilkerson comes back as the defending silver medalist and with a 24.64 performance this year. Ali comes in with the best time in AAA (24.3h on May 18). Davis has run 24.79 this season. Alicia Evans of Quakertown will be a strong medal contender this year with a 24.78 personal best, and so will Richardson of Pennsbury (24.79) and freshman Taylor Williams of Hatboro Horsham (24.90). Alicia Minella of Unionville returns after finishing 8th last year.

Alicia Evans will also be defending her 400 meter dash crown and she's entering the meet having run the best time in AAA at her district championship (55.18). Kenya Woodall of Coatesville finished right behind her in 55.70. Lynnese Beyan of Upper Darby was right behind those two in 56.34. Ce'aira Brown of Overbrook will look to break up the district 1 trio, having run 56.46 to win district 12. Abby O'Connell of North Hills is the only other medalist in the field from last year (7th) and she ran 56.56 at the district 7 championships.

Shelley Black of James M Coughlin comes in as the favorite and defending champ in the 100 meter hurdles. This season she has broken the 14 second barrier three times, including a 13.99 back in mid April at Shippensburg in the rain. Her best this year is 13.5h. Emerald Walden of Plymouth Whitemarsh was 3rd last year and has come close to sub 14 seconds this year (14.05). Kayla Charles of North Penn (4th in 2010) has run 14.80 this season. Eliana Yankelev of Lower Merion (7th in 2010) had a big weekend at district 1 and can contend for a higher medal place (14.64). Georgia Mason of Upper Darby was 6th last year. 13.66 is the meet record.

Black also will be defending her title in the 300 meter hurdles against one of the state meet record holders, Leah Nugent of Abington. Both girls are the only two under 44 seconds, with Nugent running 42.51 at district 1 and Black running 42.80 at district 2. This will be a rematch of last year, where Black beat Nugent. After those two are plenty of sub 45 second hurdlers. Anna Simone of Mount Lebanon (44.60) and Dannah Hayward of James M Coughlin (44.63) have run the 3rd and 4th best times in AAA this season. Emily Wenger of Garnet Valley returns after earning the bronze medal last season.

MID-DISTANCE/DISTANCE

Emma Keenan has bee the best girl in the state at 800 meters all season long. Last year's bronze medalist has moved her personal best to 2:11.82, but she has some really good competition coming after her. Defending champion Chloe Schmidt of State College is PA#2 with a 2:12.21, Taylor Carcella of Downingtown East has run 2:14.19, and Val Wilson of Strath Haven has run two big open 800s in the past three weeks. Heather Selheimer of North Penn was 8th last year and has come the closest to getting the best of Keenan in 2011. She has a 2:13.46 seasonal best to her name.

Half of the finalists from the 1600 meter run in 2010 return in 2011, including this year's top seed Margo Malone of North Hills (4th in 2010). Malone has a converted 4:53.34 1600 meter time from a mile that she won at the Baldwin Invite. Hanna Grossman of Strath Haven was 8th last year, but has run better than her PR from that race (5:00.47). Lauren Mills of Unionville has also run 5 flat this year (5:00.33). Chloe Schmidt of State College (2nd in 2010) and Katie Rodden of Archbishop Carroll (7th in 2010) are the other returning medalists.

State meet record holder Sara Sargent of Pennsbury is back to defend her championship in the 3200 meter run. To defend that title, she will have to go through some runners who are on a roll. Meghan McGovern of North Penn (3rd in 2010) ran a state leading 10:39.17 to win district 1. Tori Gerlach of Pennridge ran 10:49.14 in the same race. Amy Darlington of Liberty was the state leader for most of May with her 10:44.46 time at the Henderson Invite. Katie Rodden of Archbishop Carroll (10:54.01) and Paige Stoner of Pottsville (10:54.79) are the other sub 10:55 girls in the race. Leigha Anderson of Cumberland Valley (4th in 2010) and Maggie Lawrence of Wilson (8th in 2010) are the other returning medalists.

RELAYS

The top three 4x100 meter relay performances in 2011 are also the top three seeds entering the weekend. Cheltenham was PA#1 for most of the season until Norristown took over the top spot at district 1 with a time of 47.57. Penn Hills has been the best team out west, bringing a 47.88 to the meet and they won this event last year. Central Dauphin East has run in the low 48s since the weather felt like winter back in early April. Quakertown brings the 7th best time in AAA to the meet (48.52).

Penn Hills got the best of Abington in the 4x400 meter relay last year. But in 2011, Abington has been the class of the event. Abington ran 3:47.16 at the Penn Relays and only one other team has come close to that time all season. Central Bucks West ran 3:49.97 at district 1 to become a strong contender to Abington. Upper Darby has run 3:53.60 this season, and the rest of the field is over 3:55. 3:46.31 is the meet record.

The 4x800 meter relay may be the most intriguing event of the weekend. Strath Haven has been the best in PA since day one, running 9:05.34 at the Penn Relays Championship of America. West Chester Henderson ran 9:06.45 at district 1 to defeat Strath Haven. Central Bucks West ran 9:08.98 in their conference championship. The three teams are all in the national top six and the state meet and all time state record of 8:58.43 set by Upper Dublin in 1982 may have its most serious challengers to date.

JUMPS

Jordan Matthews of Abington has been the best in PA in the long jump all season long. The defending champion recently jumped 19-1 on May 5 and is the only jumper over 19 feet. Ciara Andrews of Cheltenham (18-8.50) and Madeline Eustache of Upper Darby (18-6.75) are the only other jumpers over 18-6. Logan Brenker of Conwell Egan (6th in 2010) and Rose Roesler of Carlisle (8th in 2010) are the other returning medalists, with both having 18 foot plus marks this season. 5-11 is the meet record.

In the triple jump, Gabby Becattini of Methacton has been the best in the state for the majority of the year. The 6th place finisher from 2010 recently jumped a personal best of 38-7.25 to win district 1. Shannon Daniels of State College and Jasmine Hays of West Mifflin both hit 37-11 marks in their respective district championships. Kathleen McPhillips of Carlisle carries a mark of 37-7.75 into the meet, making it four over 37-7.

The top two finishers in the high jump last year are back. But this year, they will be challenged by the new big name in the event. India McCoy of Ambridge tied for 4th last year, but this year she has become the state leader with a 5-9 win at her district meet. Defending champion Anne Holland of Pennridge has a 5-7 to her name and so does Ashley West of Pine Richland. Taylor Morgan of Upper Dublin (2nd in 2010) and Paige Kassab of Meadville Area (8th last year) are the other returning medalists.

The pole vault features three girls who have gone higher than the winning mark at states last year (12 feet). Kasey Kemp of Norwin cleared 12-6 in her district qualifier, Larisa Debich of Hempfield (7) cleared 12-3, and Kathleen McPhillips of Carlisle cleared 12-1 at district 3. Debich was 2nd last year on misses and has cleared 12 feet five times this season. Franki DiSalvo of McDowell (4th in 2010), Olivia Loy of Cedar Class (T-5th in 2010) and Haley Gorenflo of Plymouth Whitemarsh (T-7th in 2010) are the other returning medalists.

THROWS

Five of the eight medalists in the 2010 shot put are back this year including defending champion Rachel Serafin of Hempfield (7). Serafin threw a state leading 46-4.50 to win district 7 and has two and a half feet on the field. Margo Britton of Dallastown is the only other girl over 43 feet (43-11) this season. Anna McCloskey of Cardinal O'Hara (3rd in 2010), Spring Gamble of Girls High (5th in 2010), Rachel Fatherly of Williamsport (6th in 2010), and Sarah Fairbanks of Elizabethtown (8th in 2010) medaled last year, with all but Fairbanks ranked in the top six in AAA entering the state finals.

Serafin will also be defending her championship in the discus and she also enters this event with the best mark in AAA. Her mark of 137-5 is over nine feet better than 2nd seed Rachel Fatherly of Williamsport (128-4). Jenn Slagus of North Pocono has the 3rd best mark in the field and she finished 9th last year as a freshman. Anna McCloskey of Cardinal O'Hara (126-10) is the only other girl over 125 feet in the field.

Penn Relays javelin champion and 2010 bronze medalist Lauren Kenney of State College brings the best mark in the state to the meet. Her 156-2 is over ten feet better than the field. 6th place medalist Felicia Reid has the 2nd best mark of 144-5 from district 7 and Kaitlyn Brace of Peters Township is the only other girl over 140 feet (143-2). The PIAA record of 158 feet even from 2004 may possibly be challenged this weekend.
