AA Girls' 1,600m Preview
Melissa Riggins made her presence felt with a big effort in the 1,600 meters at the WPIAL Championships. The relatively unknown Shady Side freshman raced to the first sub-5 1,600 in PA by a AA girl at Baldwin, running 4:56.36 for the win. Suddenly the ninth grader became the one to beat in the AA 1,600 meters.
But a veteran will also be looking for the title. Marian Catholic's Tina Capparell flexed her clutch gene, winning the 1A XC title this fall. The senior will look to close out what has already been a great career with 1,600 meter victory.
Riggins, though, defeated a strong field at WPIALs. But a number of those girls will be back at Ship, looking for a big race at Ship. New Brighton's Alyssa Campbell, Quaker Valley's Annie Wicker, Our Lady Of Sacred Heart's Haley Hamilton, and Cardinal Wuerl North Catholic's Rylee Kopchak all ran strong races and should contend for the win this weekend.
Among the others in this field that will be looking for high finishes are District 3 champion Rebecca Snyder of Oley Valley, District 6 champion Sera Mazza of Saint Joseph's Catholic Academy, Cori McCormick of North Schuylkill, and District 2 champion Lexi Walsh of Holy Cross.
