AA Girls' 1,600m Preview
A year ago in the AA 1600 meters, Melissa Riggins of Shady Side Academy broke out from relative obscurity on a state level and the freshman announced that she would be a force for years to come on the track. She was dominant last year, running 4:56 to win by 12 seconds and she is the top seed for this weekend by 20 (!) seconds.
Riggins ran a PR of 4:48 at Baldwin this season and then went 4:50 to win the WPIAL title. She doesn't run XC or indoors, but Riggins has proved so far this spring that she hasn't lost a step and she should roll to the AA title here.
Quaker Valley's Annie Wicker, the No. 2 seed, was fifth a year ago. She should find herself well up on the podium in this event. She's been consistent this season (three times in the 5:10-5:11 range) and she'll be one to watch. North Schuylkill's Cori McCormick is the third seed and has run 5:05.07 this season. She's also running the 3200, but expect McCormick to be a factor up near the front.
Saint Joseph Catholic Academy's Sera Mazza is another returning medalist from a year ago. She took eighth and got on the podium. Look for Mazza to make another good run at Ship this weekend. Haley Hamilton of Our Lady of Sacred Heart and Emily Coddington of Shade were ninth and tenth last year, respectively. Those two are back in the field this year and should be motivated to get in the top eight. Hamilton has run 5:09 this season.
Greensburg Central Catholic's Corinn Brewer and Lake Lehman's Abby Paczewski are among the other top seeds in this field to watch out for.
