Penn Relays Preview: PA Boys Invitational Events

High School Boys' Mile Run - 4:40 P.M.

PA Entries: Gary Martin (Archbishop Wood); Weber Long (Greencastle-Antrim); CJ Singleton (Butler); Michael Woolery (Episcopal Academy); Quinn Worrell (Saint Joseph's Prep)

It's been a memorable year so far in the boys' mile, so it's fitting that PA's top boys' milers will be hitting up the Penn Relays in what should be a very special race. Martin will be chasing the sub-4 barrier on the heels of his 4:00.95 performance from a few weeks ago. But his best competition will come from his in-state rival, Singleton. He is fresh off an 8:57 3200m, so he's in a good spot to chase a quick time, too. The two battled to an historic mile at the indoor state meet two months ago with Martin taking the win in a race for the ages.

Expect Martin and Singleton to be right up front going for the win, and a shot at becoming the first PA high schooler ever to go sub-4. Worrell is one to keep an eye on. He went 4:08 in Martin's 4-flat race. Long has run back-to-back 4:11s in the 1600 and looks to be in a good spot, too, while Woolery went 4:14 indoors.

High School Boys' 3,000m - 4:48 P.M.

PA Entries: Brian DiCola (Hatboro-Horsham); Rory Lieberman (Danville Area)

A pair of PA boys will race the 3K, which comes immediately after the mile. DiCola is the indoor 3K champion, went 8:35 to win that crown two months ago. He always brings his best to big meets and should be one to watch. Lieberman was fourth at indoor states, and ran an impressive 9:11 for 3200m and 4:17 for 1600m over the past few weeks.

The field is pretty top-heavy, but look for these PA talents to put themselves right in the mix to compete for high finishes.
