PIAA District 2 Championships
- Meet Date: Wednesday, 5/15 (AA) & Thursday, 5/16 (AAA)
- District 2 Leaderboard Links: AA Girls | AAA Girls | AA Boys | AAA Boys
Who To Watch For: Victoria Atkinson (Scranton Preparatory)
Why? She pole vaulted to PA No. 5 all-time at the James Cross Wilkes-Barre Invitational a few weeks ago, jumping 13-1.5 and joining an elite group of 13+ vaulters. She is hitting her stride at the right time. She's been consistent this outdoor season, vaulted 12-7, 13-1.5, and 12-6 in her last three meets heading into Tuesday's District 2 meet.
What to expect: Atkinson took second at the District 2 Championships last year, before placing sixth in the state in AAA. D2 has a great history of pole vaulting over the last few years and Atkinson will surely be hungry for her first district title. After a second place finish at indoor states in the event, she will be a factor at the outdoor state meet too in a loaded year in the pole vault.
Others to watch for: Brooke Acoveno (AAA - High Jump); Trina Barcarola (AA - Hurdles/Pole Vault); Chalice Guyette (AA - Sprints); Kyahni Harbin (AAA - Sprints); Danielle Heine (AAA - Pole Vault); Anna Ioppolo (AAA - Jumps); Abby Korba (AA - Jumps); Mikayla Marino (AA - Throws); Calista Marzolino (AAA - Hurdles/Jumps); Madelyn Resciniti (AAA - Throws); Mackenzie Turner (AAA - Sprints); Sara Wanat (AA - High Jump)
Who To Watch For: Tyler Wirth (Wallenpaupack)
Why? Wirth has range! The senior is the top-ranked District 2 Class AAA boy in every event from the 800 to the 3200. He was fourth at the Penn Relays in the mile in 4:19 and last week, he went 9:18 to win the event at the Spagna Championship.
What to expect: It remains to be seen what events Wirth will go after at the district meet. A year ago he quadrupled at Scraton, running the 4x8, 1600, 800, and 3200. It's a tall task for the senior, but he may be up for it. As for states, Wirth went after the 1600, and that's probably his sweet spot. It's what shaping up to be a wide open year in the 1600, Wirth and his experience makes him a good bet at the state level.
Others to watch: Johnny Barcarola (AA - Sprints/Jumps); Collin Chidester (AA Hurldes); Josh Christianson (AAA - Distance); George Ellis (AAA - Jumps); Andrew Healey (AA - Distance); James Lynch (AAA - Jumps); Rafael McCoy (AAA - Sprints); Liam Mead (AA - Distance); Darryn Ouk (AAA - Sprints); Mitchell Rome (AAA - Distance); Matt Saxe (AA - Javelin); Joey Scarfalloto (AAA - Javelin); Trejon Turner (AAA - High Jump)
