PIAA District 8 AAA Championships
Meet Feature and Qualifier Pix by Phil Grove
There was no doubt. The title of Pittsburgh's fastest (young) man now rests in the hands of Eddie Harris.
![]()
The Obama Academy sprinter stole the show as his quick trips on the oval Saturday at Oliver Citywide Academy were the highlight of the District 8 (Pittsburgh City League) championship meet.
Helping kick off the Road to Shippensburg, Harris narrowly missed a meet record as he dodged raindrops in winning the 100-meter dash. His PA#8 10.81-second run was more than a second up on the rest of the field of six and just shy of the 10.77 recorded in 2009 by Peabody's Pierre Carr, who was the last City League athlete to win a PIAA track title.
Just as Carr did at the 2009 City League meet, Harris came back later to finish off the sprint double with a 22.66 in the 200.
"I like the 100," said Harris, who won both titles in the 2012 meet at Oliver. "I don't like the 200 because I don't like to do the curve. The curve kills me."
The senior said he has benefited from the use of a parachute in his training, along with additional work on his legs and the introduction of kinesthetics. In the morning prelims Saturday, he was almost as fast in the 100 (10.96) and significantly quicker in the 200 (22.18) as he chases Carr's exploits at the state meet of 100 wins in 2008 and 2009 and the 200 title in 2009.
The only other competitor to claim a spot at Shippensburg -- event champions had to hit the PIAA Class AA standard, while runners-up needed a AAA qualifier - was Allderdice's Paige Phillips. The senior will run the 100 hurdles at Seth Grove Stadium thanks to her winning effort of 15.83.
![]()
Phillips was a major contributor to Allderdice's runaway team championship on the girls' side as she also was victorious in the 200 dash and 300 hurdles Saturday after winning the long jump Thursday afternoon. Teammate Kerianne Hensel won three individual events (800, 1,600 and 3,200 runs) and anchored the 4x400 relay.
