Editor's Note: Those who know Josianne Joy Lauber, know she is an enthusiastic, loyal, effervescent, (did we say enthusiastic?), talkative, very good distance runner. But very good just won't sit with Josi years from now when she looks back on her running career. Josi simply wants to see how good she can be.

Josianne Lauber -- Running Biography

The Beginning (scroll up to start Josi's Journal)

Josi and her NC State sweats.

Welcome to Josi's journey... a Journal, (or Blog, if you prefer), of Josi's attempt to make the Swiss National Cross Country team and race in the European Championships in December, 2005.

Swiss? Huh? I thought she was from Pennsylvania, you say? Well, yes, she was, sort of. And no, she's isn't. But we'll let Josi tell you how she got from Canada, to Pennsylvania, to Raleigh, to Geneva. And for the next several months, follow her journey across Europe, training and racing in hopes of running her best and learning more about herself.

A couple of quick Josi stories: The first time I saw Josi win a race was at the PIAA state cross country championships in 1999 at Lehigh. She came in an underdog to her friend, Renee Gunning of Pennridge. Gunning had blistered the Lehigh course the week before, going 17:42 and change, with Josi 13 seconds back. Everybody expected a repeat. But Gunning had an off day, and by the mile, Lauber was with her friend and it was obvious Gunning was struggling. Josi tried to encourage Renee to stay with her, but soon had to make the choice to run her own race, winning in 18 minutes-point. Gunning was a DNF.

They would meet again several years later when Gunning transferred from Villanova to North Carolina State with the encouragement of her friend, Josi.

Just a few months later at an indoor meet at Lehigh, I stopped to talk to Josi after her race, and asked her how her training was going -- especially in light of recent snows. Without hesitation, she told me that it was tougher then you'd think. She had been given a track workout, and with the track at Oxford covered in snow, she figured the only way to get in the run was... you guessed it... shovel a lane of the track. Needless to say, the shoveling was quite a workout by itself.

Sounds like a distance runner, doesn't it?

Enjoy the journey. I know I will.
